Setting Limits You Will Actually Keep
A retreat shows what life is like with fewer inputs. The lasting benefit comes from a few limits you carry home.
Limits are easier than willpower
Deciding in advance removes the decision in the moment. That is true of screens, spending, drinking and anything else designed to be hard to stop.
Four kinds of limit
- Time: how long, and until when.
- Money: a fixed amount, set beforehand.
- Frequency: how many times a week.
- Loss: the point at which you stop.
Where this framing comes from
These four are the standard tools of responsible gambling programmes, and they transfer well to other habits. A beginner's version in Traditional Chinese: four limits a newcomer should set, with the reminder that such games cost money on average (理性娛樂|四個上限設定). You do not need to gamble for the structure to be useful.
Make limits physical
Leave the phone in another room. Take cash instead of a card. Set an alarm for stopping, not only for starting.
Review monthly
Keep the limits that held. Loosen or drop the ones you kept breaking, and ask what made them unrealistic.
If a habit is causing harm, speak to a doctor or a local support service.
