Deposits, Refunds and Payout Rules: Read Them Before You Pay
Retreats take deposits months ahead. What happens to that money if plans change is written down somewhere. Find it first.
What to look for
- How much is taken now, and when the balance is due.
- Cancellation deadlines and what is returned at each.
- Whether you can transfer the place to someone else.
- What happens if the organiser cancels.
How refunds actually arrive
A refund is approved first and paid afterwards, back to the method you used. Expect several working days after approval.
Any service that holds your money has checkpoints
Identity, conditions, approval, transfer. Seeing those checkpoints written out helps you know what to ask. A detailed example in Traditional Chinese, from a different industry, is this walkthrough of the four stages a withdrawal passes through and the usual reasons one is sent back (出金流程與退件原因). Swap the nouns and it describes a booking refund closely.
Pay in a way that protects you
Card payments usually carry more protection than bank transfers. Keep the confirmation and the terms as they were on the day you paid.
If something goes wrong
Write to the organiser first, clearly and with dates. Then your card provider or insurer.
